What are things I should know before I go?

  1. Timing is so important
Typically, there are 3 to 4 trains that run this route, with one leaving in the middle of the night and the other two departing at more reasonable hours. To fully appreciate the stunning views, it’s recommended that you take one of the morning trains. It’s also essential to avoid the slow trains, as they take much longer and can be extremely crowded. Instead, opt for one of the faster trains, which will get you to Ella more quickly and comfortably. We recommend taking the 8:50 AM train from Kandy station. Although it was a little late, it gave us a chance to explore the charming station and grab some breakfast before our journey.
  2. Pick the right class
The trains from Kandy to Ella offer three different classes of travel: First, Second, and Third. First class is the most comfortable option, with air-conditioned coaches and plush seats. Second class has non-AC coaches with individual seats in pairs, and is a popular choice among travelers as it allows you to slide open the windows and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Sri Lanka. Third class, meanwhile, has non-AC coaches with bench chairs. It’s worth noting that there is a difference between second class reserved and unreserved tickets. Unreserved tickets can only be purchased at the station and do not guarantee you a seat. Most people opt for second class reserved tickets, which can be booked online or at the station.
During our journey, we had booked second class tickets online but were upgraded to first class since the second class was overbooked. Although we were disappointed at first, we soon realised that first class had its own advantages. The coaches had four open doors and were less crowded, giving us plenty of space to enjoy the scenery. And when we needed a break from standing, we had the luxury of comfortable seats and air conditioning. We also took a stroll through the entire train and found that second class was filled with Instagram content creators looking to capture the stunning landscapes.
  1. De-board at the right station
This train actually originates from Colombo and passes through a bunch of picturesque villages. It stops at Kandy, Hatton (Adam’s Peak), Nanuoya (Nuwara Eliaya), Ella and many more. You can choose to get on and off at any station.

💡 Tip: If you want to see the famous Nine Arch Bridge in Ella from the train, make sure to stay on the train until the stop after Ella, which is Demodara.
  2. Side of the train matters: It’s important to note that the scenery is not consistent on both sides of the train. Hence, your experience will greatly depend on which side of the train you sit on. For the journey from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, choose a seat on the right side of the train. For the rest of the journey, pick a seat on the left side of the train. Many passengers embark and disembark at different stations, so switching seats should be relatively easy.
  3. Shorter journey from Nuwara Eliya
If you’re short on time but still want to experience the train journey, consider boarding the train at Nuwara Eliya. From here, the journey to Ella takes only four hours, allowing you to soak up the scenic views while also spending the night in Nuwara Eliya. This charming town offers plenty to explore, including beautiful tea estates and colonial bungalows. To catch the train at Nuwara Eliya, head to the Nanuoya station. It’s a long journey and you will tend to get hungry. Although, there are a few vendors who board the train at various stations and sell fruits and snacks. It may not be enough, or even healthy. Plus, you will only reach Ella around 4:30 PM. Hence, carry snacks and sufficient water to keep yourself satiated.
  5. Don’t hog the open doors
The train’s open doors and widows provide an incredible opportunity to take in the stunning views of Sri Lanka’s countryside. It’s tempting to hang outside and feel the wind in your hair, but it’s important to remember that this can be extremely dangerous. Without guardrails, there’s nothing to prevent you from falling if you lose your grip. Be mindful of your fellow passengers and don’t hog the space. Allow others to enjoy the views and the fresh air as well.

Last but not least, don’t forget to enjoy the journey. Take in the stunning views, chat with the locals, and make new friends. It’s an experience of a lifetime, and you don’t want to miss it.
